Microsoft continues a long history of confusing the heck out of us with the names they choose for their services — and then changing those names as they go along. Microsoft had pushed for non-Microsoft entities to create an Internet-wide unified-login system.17 Examples of sites that used Microsoft Passport were eBay and Monster.com, but in 2004 those agreements were canceled.18 In August 2009, Expedia sent notice out stating they no longer support Microsoft Passport / Windows Live ID. Where is Hotmail and what is Outlook.com?
While the email service remained Hotmail in name, the domains that appeared in your browser’s address bar changed. Hotmail.com took you to URLs based on msn.com, live.com, and others (and for a while, passport.com, Microsoft’s first attempt to use your Microsoft email address as “one account for everything”). A Microsoft account is what you use to access Microsoft’s devices, websites, and services. It is an ID composed of an e-mail address and password that you use to log in to your Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer, Xbox Series X console, Microsoft 365 subscription, Skype, OneDrive, Microsoft Edge, Bing, and so on.
